(Un)Moralische Emotionen & Westernsplaining

Abstract

Viele moralphilosophische Konzepte haben sich aus kolonialen Legitimationsdiskursen heraus entwickelt. Um diesbezüglich Philosophie als Selbstkritik zu praktizieren, werde ich das Begriffspaar „Scham(kulturen) und Schuld(- kulturen)“ als konkretes Beispiel diskutieren und die (un)moralischen Emotionen Scham und Schuld in der deutsch- und englischsprachigen Philosophie von Immanuel Kant bis hin zur Debatte um die moral emotions kritisch beleuchten. Der diesem Begriffspaar zugrundeliegende Ethnozentrismus kann durch einen interkulturellen Polylog zwischen Nordamerika, Europa und Japan aufgedeckt werden. Der Blick auf japanische Scham- und Schuldphänomene sowie der japanische Blick auf europäische Varianten deckt eine ethnozentrische Verkürzung der europäischen Begriffe auf. Dadurch kann nicht nur das kolonialistische Konzept der „Scham- und Schuldkulturen“ korrigiert, sondern auch das eigene moralphilosophische Vokabular präzisiert werden.

Many concepts of moral philosophy have developed out of colonial legitimation discourses. In order to practice philosophy as self-criticism in this regard, I will discuss the conceptual pair “shame (cultures) and guilt (cultures)” as a concrete example and critically examine the (im)moral emotions shame and guilt in both German and Anglophone philosophy, from Immanuel Kant to the debate on moral emotions. The underlying ethnocentrism of this conceptual pair can be revealed through an intercultural polylogue between North America, Europe, and Japan. The view on Japanese shame and guilt phenomena as well as the Japanese view on European variants uncovers an ethnocentric bias of the European concepts. Thus, not only can the colonialist concept of shame and guilt cultures be corrected, but also our own moral philosophical vocabulary can be made more precise.
