Abstract

English version

Serene Khader’s Decolonizing universalism presents an enlightening and carefully argued for theory about how to understand the goals and methods of an anti-imperialist, transnational feminism. At the centre of her theory stands a definition of feminism as resistance to sexist oppression, that is as resistance to any systemic disadvantage along gender lines. Yet, she gives little defense for why this specific understanding of oppression is best suited for a transnational and anti-imperialist feminism. In the following, I will suggest that it is not just unclear what the justification of Khader’s concept of oppression is but that her concept conflicts with some of the other positions she advances in the book and the few hints she gives towards the justification of the universal values she proposes. I will then propose that a different concept of oppression as a denial of autonomy would be a better fit for the aims of her theory. Section 2 gives a short overview of Khader’s concept of oppression. Section 3 discusses why her concept of oppression conflicts with some of her own demands for an anti-imperialist, transnational feminism. Section 4 proposes an alternative definition of oppression that is potentially more consistent with the aims of her theory.
