Der Begriff der Supererogation und das Problem moralischer Optionalität

Abstract

Es gibt moralisch gute Handlungen, die über die Pflicht hinausgehen. Wer sie unterlässt, handelt nicht moralisch falsch, obwohl es moralisch besser wäre, sie auszuüben. Diese Vorstellung scheint tief im moralischen Alltagsverständnis verankert zu sein. Es ist allerdings keineswegs klar, dass sich diese Vorstellung moralphilosophisch in einer kohärenten und substantiell gehaltvollen Weise verteidigen lässt. Sie setzt eine Form von moralischer Optionalität voraus, die mit dem Standardmodell moralisch-praktischer Rationalität unvereinbar scheint. Der Beitrag unterscheidet ausgehend von der einschlägigen Literatur fünf Weisen der Rekonstruktion von Handlungen, die dem Alltagsverständnis zufolge zwar gut, deren Unterlassung aber nicht moralisch falsch ist. Nur zwei dieser Rekonstruktionen sind nicht-revisionistisch. Die erste dieser nicht-revisionistischen Rekonstruktionen geht allerdings eine hohe Begründungslast ein. Es ist offen, ob sie sich auf einer substantiellen Ebene einlösen lässt. Die zweite Rekonstruktion erscheint primär deswegen nicht-revisionistisch, weil sie einen ungewöhnlich weiten Moralbegriff voraussetzt.

​There are morally good acts that go beyond the call of duty. Omitting them is not morally wrong or blameworthy even though it would be morally better to perform them. This, at least, seems to be an idea deeply embedded in moral common sense. It is, however, far from evident that it can be defended in a coherent and substantial way. Crucially, so-called supererogatory acts imply a kind of moral optionality that seems to be at odds with the standard model of practical rationality. How can it not be wrong not to choose the morally better option? The paper distinguishes five reconstructions of the common sense understanding of supererogatory acts to be found in the literature based on five reconstructions of moral optionality. Only two of them are clearly non-revisionist reconstructions. The first of these non-revisionist reconstructions incurs a high burden of proof. It is an open question whether it can be discharged. The second one, on the other hand, seems to be non-revisionist because it relies on an unusually broad concept of morality.
